Lakhs of students appear in the AIEEE examination each year with the objective to secure a seat in a prestigious government or private engineering college in India. NITs, IIITs, BIT and several other private or university administered institutes participates in the counseling process each year that is carried out by the counseling board constituted for the purpose. However, majority of candidates filling their choices do not have much idea of the institution, fee structure and infrastructure facilities available at the institutes. PROFEXION, a Teachers, Researchers, & Techies Forum, has taken initiative to analyze the data pertaining to minimum opening rank, average opening and closing ranks and number of branches offered by individual institutes in the year 2010. A scientific methodology giving appropriate weightage to each criteria was adopted and ranking was done of the institute grouping them in two categories. First category included NITs, BIT campuses, IIIts, IICT, nad JK institute of applied Physics and technology. Second category included all other private or university administered institutes. Second category included BIT, JK institute of applied Physics and 17 other institutes. Top institute among participating NITS, BIT, IIITs and other engineering institutes was the NIT, Warrangal. Next in order were Surathkal and Trichurapalli. Other institutes among the top ten slots were: NIT, Allahabad, NIT Calicut, NIT, Jaipur, Kurukshetra, Nagpur, Surat and Bhopal. BIT, Mesra appeared to be the first choice, among privately or university administered institutions in India, of the aspirants during 2010 counseling. Other institutes in order of to 10 ranking as per choices and final allotment were: BIT, Patna, JK Institute of applied Physics and Technology - University of Allahabad, Bhagwant University, Ajmer, BIT, Deghar, Institute of Technology, Guru Ghasidas vishwa Vidyalay, Bilaspur, Jagannath University, Jaipur, Tezpur University, Faculty of Engineering & Technology - Gurukul Kangri, Haridwar, and Lovely professional University, Punjab. Other institutes rankings are shown in the table below.

After scoring a good rank in the AIEEE examination with engineering stream, one finds it difficult to choose a NIT, BIT, IIIT or any other institute offering admission to students in their various B. Tech courses. PROFEXION, a social networking site for professionals has tried to analyse the data available from CCB site for 2010. This attempt of profection may prove a useful guide for students and their guardians when it comes about selection of an institute of good repute. There are several institutes which have hiked their tuition fees based on their false reputation but they stand far behind from the institutes which charges just half fee than the former. This aspect is given consideration in this analysis. Since methodology considers the candidates choice and gives maximum weightage to it, no other criteria can be compared with it.

Lot of surveys, based on different methodologies, are coming up for ranking of engineering colleges in India. However, reliability of such surveys is marred by absence of prominent institutions in the list of ranked institutions. There exist chances of influence of different factors on the outcome of results of these surveys. If we assume that surveying agencies have taken care of all these factors, none can guarantee that all the existing institutions will participate in these surveys. PROFEXION has attempted a new methodology purely based on the choices of students and final allotment of seats to aspiring students by the Central Counselling Board. All the participating institutes in the central counselling 2010 have been included barring few institutions. Students are asked to fill their choices by the CCB at different stages and final admission figure reflects true choice of the students. In fact, these choices are not merely filled in by the candidates based on any single criteria but include interest of the student, all India AIEEE rank, fee structure of different institutes and infrastructure facilities, faculty composition, location and branches offered by the institute. Parents of the students, career counsellors and published information about the institute etc. play a very significant role in the final process of getting admitted to an institution. PROFECTION has gathered information about the opening and closing ranks in the different branches of the institutes that have participated in 2010 CCB counselling and analysed the information using different criteria. IITs are the bests and process of selection to IITs is different. Since CCB finalizes seat allotment to NITs, IIITs, BITs and few other participating institutes based on ALL INDIA RANK of the students in the AIEEE examination, IITs are kept out of scope of this analysis. In 2011, about eleven lakh students appeared in the examination. From the list of all qualified students, those securing ranks within 30,000 (open category) have better prospects of selection in the institutions mentioned above. Results of this analysis will prove useful for students aspiring to become engineer in the future.

Methodology

Forty one institutions were considered as serious contenders for this analysis. Details of the methodology adopted by PROFEXION for this analysis can be found here. Opening and closing AIR ranks (overall rank) under the open category were arranged for different branches of the institutes. Number of branches or specializations offered by the participating institutes were counted. Different weightages were assigned for average opening and closing AIR for participating institutions. Minimum opening rank (AIR) ranged from 124 (NIT, Warrangal) to 30037 (IICT, Bhadoi). Weightage was calculated in such a manner that '124' weighted to 40 points and 30037 to 10.1. Likewise average opening ranks were given a maximum of 30 points, and average closing ranks a weightage of 20 points. Average opening rank varied between 3344 to 30037 with a variation of 26.7 points in the weightage. Average closing ranks showed maximum variation (9833 - 71307). There was a huge difference in number of branches offered among institutes. Few institutes offered either a single branch or 30 branches. Hence a weightage of 10 marks was given to diversification criteria. Total points gathered by the individual institute were added up and top ranking was given to institute getting maximum points and lowest to the institute securing least points.

Rankings

  • Top institute among participating NITS, BIT, IIITs and other engineering institutes, NIT, Warrangal emerged as the top ranked institute followed by Surathkal and Trichurapalli. Other institutes among the top ten slots were: NIT, Allahabad, NIT Calicut, NIT, Jaipur, Kurukshetra, Nagpur, Surat and Bhopal.
  • BIT, Mesra filled the 11th slot while its two other campuses at Patna and Deoghar failed to catch up with it as the choicest campuses of the students (BIT, Patna -32, BIT Deoghar - 37).
  • Different IIITs also got ranks below the expectation as shown below.

IIIT, Kanchipuram - 19, IIIT, Amethi 25, PDPM IIIT, Jabalpur-28,

  • Ranks of institutes other than NITs and IIITs: AB Vajpayee IITM, Gwalior 27, JK Institute of Technology, Univ. of Allahabad - 29, NIFFT, Ranchi - 39, IICT, Bhadoi - 41

Private institutes/university administered engineering institutes

Ranking of institutes that are run either by privateagencies/organizations or administered by universities was made separately. Methodology followee for this ranking was similar to the methodology adopted for ranking NITs and IIITs except the fact that weightage were different those given to MOR, AOR and ACR of NITs and BITs to make accurate comparison between these institutions.
